Smart Water Resource Management
Proposed by: University of Milan Bicocca; Polytechnic of Milan; Omnitech Srl - capogruppo; Systea Spa; Sit Srl; Sitael SPA;Brianza acque Srl; Degremont; Lav Srl; Etg Srl; Metropolitane Milanese SPA
The project aims to combine the demand for innovation in the field of water resource protection with the strategic choice of focusing on "smart cities" providing an active involvement of citizens in land management and implementation of environmental policies, in close agreement with the “Europe 2020” strategy which identified smart growth, sustainable growth and inclusive growth as the main engines of economic recovery. The project idea meets the need for an integrated water management that is able to combine the protection of the water resources through innovative strategies and technologies, in order to increase the efficiency of its use and the performance of the networks and treatment plants in the area, with the development of new, reliable and easily accessible distributed monitoring systems allowing a widespread control of the quality of water resources.

The aim of the project WATERTECH is to develop and test new portable sensors (based on radar technology, opto-electronic and acoustic) and integrated systems for the collection and submission of data to support operators working for the increase of network efficiency of water management. Among the products that will be tested, there will be sensors deployed to monitor precision agriculture, radar sensors cheap laptops for monitoring leaks in water mains, fiber optic sensors and microwave sensors for the detection of pollutants, algorithms of data fusion for integration of radar sensors and acoustic sensors for the minimization of false alarms in the monitoring operations and decision Support Systems for the monitoring and implementation.
