(AGI) Dar Es Salaam, Sept 2 - Italy has taken a leading role insupporting Tanzania's women thanks to a mobile surgery unitequipped with a mammograph. The unit was donated by theAssociazione Italiana Ruvuma Onlus to the Santa Maria Nascentehospital of Mbweni, which is managed by Indian nuns of thecongregation of the Daughters of Mary Immaculate (DMI). The aimis to promote the concept of prevention in the African country,especially in view of the spreading surge of breast cancer. Amobile surgery unit will reach out to a large number of womenin the age group most at risk, giving them free access toessential prevention and early diagnosis tests for breastcancer. In Tanzania since 1992, the Ruvuma Onlus also donatedto the Santa Maria Nascente hospital its first pavilion, whichis now at the forefront in the field of mother and child careand laboratory tests thanks to last-generation medicalequipment and expert medical staff, some of whom are fromItaly. The inauguration ceremony of the mobile surgery unit wasattended by the founders of Ruvuma Onlus and DMI, the IndianAmbassador, Sandreep Arya, representatives of the Ministry ofHealth and missionary organisations. The guest of honour wasItalian Ambassador Luigi Scotto who, in his speech, mentionedthe many hospitals built in Tanzania thanks to solidarity-basedinitiatives of Italian secular and religious donorinstitutions. The ambassador also emphasised how thecollaboration between Italian volunteers and Indian Catholicmissionaries, as the one in place in the Mbweni hospital,highlights the role played by Italy in promoting andsafeguarding public health in Tanzania.
