(AGI) London, Feb 2 - Two bronzes statues may be the work ofMichelangelo, not other artists as previously thought. Thestatues of two nude male figures riding panthers are about ametre high and are also known as the Rothschild Bronzes, saidexperts from the Fitzwilliam Museum at the University ofCambridge. They are thought to be the only bronzes left made bythe maestro from Florence. This is not the first time the workswere linked to Michelangelo: in 1878 they were exhibited asauthentic Michelangelo, an attribution that was disputed by ascholar. Later they were attributed to Dutch sculptor WillemDanielsz Van Tetrode. The discovery was made by aninternational team led by the University of Cambridge and theFitzwilliam Museum. The breakthrough came in the autumn lastyear, when Paul Joannides, a professor of art history atCambridge, saw a drawing by one of the master's apprentices atthe Musee Fabre in Montpellier, France. The drawing showed amuscular youth riding a panther in a similar pose. Furtherstudies confirmed that the sketch was similar to the vigorousstyle that Michelangelo used between 1500 and 1510, the periodthe bronzes were made. Michelangelo has made several bronzestatues that have been lost: a version of his David disappearedduring the French Revolution and a huge bronze of Pope JuliusII was melted down to build artillery pieces three years afterMichelangelo completed it. The bronzes will be on display atthe Fitzwilliam from Feb. 3 to Aug. 9 and more findings andresearch will be presented at an international conference onJuly 6. .
