(AGI) Bogota', Aug 27 - John Jairo Velasquez Vasquez, alsoknown as "Popeye", the hired killer of Colombian drugs lordPablo Escobar, has been freed after 22 years in prison. He wasaccused of planning 3,000 murders and executing 300 people inthe 1980s and 1990s, making him Medellin cartel chief Escobar'smost brutal killer. His release has caused heated controversyin Bogota. The hitman's 30-year sentence was reduced by eightyears after he collaborated with judicial authorities over the1989 murder of presidential candidate Luis Carlos Galan, whichled to the arrest of former Justice Minister, AlbertoSantofimio, for commissioning the killing. Vasquez, 52, leftthe high security Combita prison escorted by police vehiclesand will spend four years on probation. He was "released undera 52-month and 22-day probation period", said a court order. .
