(AGI) Rome, Aug. 19 - The Italian president on Wednesday warnedfor the risk of terrorism causing a third world war."Terrorism, fed also by fanatical distortions of the faith inGod, is trying to introduce the seeds of a third world war inthe Mediterranean, Middle East and Africa," said ItalianPresident Sergio Mattarella in his message to the RiminiMeeting, in which he appeals for unity and solidarity amongpeoples and cultures. "It is our responsibility to defusethe threat," he continued. "Peace in the world will depend onthe ability of the monotheistic religions to talk with eachother and to understand each other." The president also pointedout that Europe has a crucial task to fulfill, "because thedialogue between the monotheistic religions can take placewithin our societies, which have become pluralistic andmulti-ethnic." Mattarella also stressed the importance ofwelcoming those who seek refuge in Europe. "The humanity thatwe show in welcoming desperate refugees, the intelligence withwhich we tackle migration, the firmness with which we fighttraffickers: those of the things that will show the world thequality of life in a democracy. Democracy is exported withculture and by setting an example." The president's speechtriggered a reaction from the leader of the regionalistNorthern League, Matteo Salvini, who called for humanitytowards Italian people as well, not just for migrants."Mattarella demands 'humanity' for refugees. But no humanityfor Italians suffering from illegal immigrants and taxes?",Salvini wondered, in a Tweet. The centre-left Democratic Partyresponded immediately, with Deputy Secretary DeboraSerracchiani saying that "it is increasingly clear that Salviniis a problem for Italy when talking about the issue ofimmigration, not a solution. To turn against the President, orthe Church or the world at large will earn Salvini and Maronithe satisfaction of making their point, but will not help theItalians in any way." . .
