(AGI) Rome, Aug. 6 - Italy's Interministerial Committee forEconomic Planning (CIPE) on Thursday approved an important planfor the development of ultrafast Internet in Italy. "It is areal innovation for our country," said Italian Prime MinisterMatteo Renzi after Thursday's cabinet meeting. "The firstinterventions will start this autumn. The goal is to achievetotal coverage for the country. Today we shift from fifth gearand move to sixth: super-fast broadband. This is the future ofthe country. It is the key. This plan is worth 12 billion: 5billion from private sources and 7 billion from public funding.Of these 12 billion, 2.2 billion will be available immediately,as we have already written the first cheque. All that telecomoperators have to do is get involved." Undersecretary forCommunications, Antonello Giacomelli, welcomed the approval ofthe plan. "The government is keeping its commitments onsuper-fast broadband: today we released the first 2.2 billionand we are committed to a total of 5 billion, which we will addto the 2 billion from European regional funds. The firsttenders can be launched as early as this autumn. If privateparties get involved, as seemed to be the outcome of a meetingof the telecom operators, the objective of having modernbroadband for all Italian citizens by 2020 appears possible.". .
