RIO SHOWCASES FIRST EXHIBIT ON 'DEMARTINO IN BRAZIL'

(VELINO) Roma, 16 Jun - 'Demartino in Brazil' is an exhibitionwhich showcases, in Brazil, the works of the Italian Navyofficer, Demartino. The officer abandoned his career followingan accident that occurred in Rio de La Plata, and devoted histime to genre painting. The exhibition will be hosted in Rio deJaneiro's National Museum of Fine Arts and will run from June17 to September 20. It has been organised together with theItalian Cultural Institute of Rio. On the occasion, the exhibitwill host 45 works from the Museu da Marinha, from the MuseuNacional de Belas Artes and others. The artist, born in Meta,[near Sorrento, Campania] , painted mostly warships and battlescenes. He worked for the Court of Emperor Dom Pedro II and wassent by him as the official painter on the war front withParaguay, where he painted numerous scenes. He later moved toEngland, where he was appointed as official painter to QueenVictoria. His works, drawings and particularly handsome oilpaintings testify to his masterly skills. Demartino's works arekept in several museums in Brazil, but this is the firstexhibition organised expressly for the artist. vel.
