World Environment Day celebrated at Milan Expo

(AGI) Rho (Milan), June 5 - Milan Expo 2015 celebrated UN WorldEnvironment Day on Friday in the presence ofUnder-Secretary-General and United Nations EnvironmentProgramme (UNEP) Executive Director, Achim Steiner. Mr Steinerchose the World Fair for this year's event on the theme of"Seven billion dreams. One planet. Consume with care". The daywas also marked by a visit to the exhibition site of ItalianPresident Sergio Mattarella. Proceedings were officially openedin the afternoon with a video message from UN Secretary GeneralBan Ki-Moon, who called on people to "think about theenvironmental consequences of what we do", becoming "guardiansof our planet". Alongside Mr Steiner, Environment Minister GianLuca Galletti wanted to "reaffirm on behalf of Italy and thegovernment its continuing and convinced support for UNEP andthe firm belief in the need to continue to strengthen the roleof the leading global environment authority, particularly inthis crucial year for decision taking". Minister Galletticalled attention to the "unsustainable consumption patternsthat are becoming increasingly widespread throughout the world,with three billion new middle-class consumers who will helpexpand the global population by the year 2030. In the face ofthese serious imbalances we have a duty in the face of presentchallenges and those of future generations to seize theopportunity for change offered by the big and multi-dimensionalinternational forum of Expo 2015".
