Student leaders and over 100 others arrested in Hong Kong
(AGI) Beijing, Nov. 26 - Police in Hong Kong have cleared mostof the area in Mong Kok district which had been taken over byprotesters demanding more democracy. At least 116 people werearrested for the unrest which followed the removal ofblockades. The barricades on NathanRoad, a major thoroughfare in Mong Kok, were put up at thebeginning of the protest movement, which began September 28.The protest denounces the island's current electoral law, whichdoes not provide for Hong Kong citizens to vote for their ownleader, the Chief Executive of Hong Kong. Over one hundredagents watched as street barricades began to be removed fromMong Kok on Tuesday morning. Joshua Wong, the leader ofScholarism, which represents secondary school students, hadalready been detained and subsequently released by the policein September after the initial protests in front of governmentheadquarters. The latest arrests came after a night of clashesbetween pro-democracy demonstrators and Mong Kok lawenforcement officers. Mong Kok has seen the most violentprotests in all of Hong Kong and was the scene of theanti-Occupy protests in September. Police officers used pepperspray to clear the crowd and twenty of them were injured in theclashes. On Tuesday, some 7,000 police officers worked over twoshifts to handle the protesters and it took about five hours toremove some of the Argyle Street barricades and allow carsthrough. . .
