(AGI) Ragusa, July 1 - Police are on the tracks of the humantraffickers who packed hundreds of people on the fishing boatthat was rescued in the Strait of Sicily on Monday. Thirty menwere found dead in the hull, suffocated in the overcrowdedconditions. The fishing boat is being towed by the Italian Navyship Grecale to the port of Pozzallo, where it is expected todock on Tuesday evening. Investigators boarded the boat on thehigh seas to start immediate questioning. They collectedimportant evidence now being examined by the PublicProsecutor's Office of Ragusa. The migrants said they had beenphysically abused by the Libyan traffickers. The friends of themen found dead in the hull tearfully reported: "We tried torescue them as soon as we realised, we did everything we couldbut it was too late, they seemed to be asleep". The mensuffocated due to the lack of air in the cramped hull. Therewere 566 survivors from a total number of 600 passengers onboard. The men who died were all from Central Africa.Eye-witnesses also reported moments of great tension betweenAfricans and Syrians after the helmsman had mistaken the routeand also because the Africans were harassing Syrian women. .
