'Divine Comedy' gets public reading in Ireland

(AGI) Dublin, Nov 28 - Public readings of Dante's "DivineComedy" will be given in Ireland to celebrate the 750thanniversary of the poet's birth. On Saturday the 34 Infernochants will be read at the National Gallery of Ireland.Ireland's President Michael D. Higgins will be the first of 100readers in the three days it will take to cover Dante'smasterpiece. Italian ambassador, Giovanni Adorni Braccesi, willfollow the president, and other readers include writers JohnBanville and Catherine Dunne, Italian actor and writer MoniOvadia, the president's wife, Sabina Coyne Higgins, members ofthe nation's civil and cultural life, the director of theNational Gallery of Ireand, Sean Rainbird, and director of theNational Library of Ireland, Sandra Collins. Members of theItalian community in Ireland who will take part include thedirector of Mediolanum Irlanda, Furio Pietrobasi, members ofthe Comites, students and alumni of the Italian CulturalInstitute and universities and professors of the departmentsof Italian Studies. The readings begin in Cork on Dec. 4, withthe Purgatory, and readings of Paradise will be held on Dec. 11in the Chapel of Trinity College. Dante's original text, andselected versions of the English text, will be projected on alarge screen during the reading of the three cantos, most ofwhich will be read in Italian, but also in German, Spanish,French, Finnish and Russian. The Italian Cultural Institute ofDublin organised this event with the Friends of the NationalGallery of Ireland, Trinity College Dublin, University CollegeCork and the University College Dublin.
