(AGI) Moscow, Nov 26 - Tension is high between Russia andTurkey after the Turks shot down a Russian jet near the borderwith Syria. Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan said in aninterview with France 24 that Vladimir Putin had not respondedto his calls after the downing of the plane. "We need to talkabout what happened, but Putin has not returned my call... Hadwe known it was a Russian plane we may have acted differently,"he said. A few hours earlier, Erdogan reiterated that Turkey"has no reason to attack Russia, a country with which it hasstrong ties." The President repeated that the attack took placein full respect of the rules of engagement, saying that thenationality of the aircraft was unknown at the time the TurkishF-16 appeared on the scene. Turkey has yet to apologise oroffer compensation to Moscow, stressed President Putin. MrPutin said he had the impression that the Turkish governmentwants to bring relations with Moscow "to a standstill" andrepeated that he considered absolutely inexplicable such a"stab in the back" by a country that Moscow regarded as ally inthe fight against terrorism. The Russian Foreign Ministry hascalled on its citizens in Turkey to return home. "Due tocontinuing terrorist threats in Turkey, we reiterate ourrecommendation that Russian citizens refrain from visiting theRepublic of Turkey, and we recommend that Russians stayingthere for personal reasons return home," the ministry said in astatement. After the shooting down of the jet on Tuesday theRussian foreign minister had already advised its citizens notto travel to Turkey. (AGI). .
