(VELINO) Roma, 9 Sep - In a sign of the growing cooperationbetween Italy and Brazil, Vice President of the Chamber ofDeputies, Marina Sereni, has just concluded a visit to Brasiliaand Sao Paulo accompanied by the coordinator of Italy-LatinAmerica conferences, Donato Di Santo. The main purpose of thevisit was to intensify contacts with Brazilian members of theItaly-Brazil Parliamentary Friendship Group, the Italian sideof which is chaired by Ms Sereni. The visit, coordinated by theItalian embassy, also allowed the Vice President of the Chamberof Deputies to take stock of the internal situation in Brazilwith a series of meetings with people from the three mainpolitical groupings. Ms Sereni participated in a conference atthe Getulio Vargas Foundation in Sao Paulo as well as meetingrepresentatives of the community. In Brasilia, she met hercounterpart, Arlindo Chinaglia, the chairman of the HouseForeign Affairs and Defence committee, Luiz Barbosa, andinfluential Brazilian members of the friendship group includingthe chairman, MP Cida Borghetti. On all occasions, VicePresident Sereni clarified the reasons why the Group needs towork more intensively nowadays. In addition to the historicalfriendship between the two countries, the ties from cooperationin the economic and technological environment are increasinglyimportant. Moreover, she stressed the importance ofparliamentary diplomacy, whose effectiveness lies primarily inits cross-sectoral nature and in being free from directgovernment responsibilities. In this regard, issues of commoninterest have been identified and will be pursued. These covercooperation in the field of prisons and social reintegration ofprisoners, in combating drugs and in drug rehabilitation,welfare (health and care of the elderly and disabled), andstudy of the introduction in one of the two countries ofregulations shown to have yielded positive results in theother. vel.
