(AGI) Rho (Milan), June 12 - Every year Italy wastes 1.3billion tons of food, worth a total of 750 million dollars. Inshort, the quantity of wasted food could feed three-quarters ofthe Italian population, reported Luigi Sbarra, the nationalcommissioner of the FAI CISL trade union at the Milan Expo onFriday. He was speaking at a conference on work in the agrofoodsector organised by the trade union at Cascina Triulza. MrSbarra urged to focus on product quality but also on jobcreation in a sector like the agrofood sector in which it isnecessary to capitalise on the positive indicators to maximisethe sector's competitiveness, which is to be achieved "not bydowngrading work but by betting on excellence, typical productsand multifunctionality," he said. The positive figures are the "2.6 billion euros that thee-commerce turns over every year in the agrofood sector", butthere are also figures which could be improved, like the "60million euros worth of sales in counterfeit goods." Hecontinued: "Our treasure trove is quality. This is what we mustfocus on because Italy is a trove of cultures, which are theorigin of a multitude of different traditions. This heritage isto be upgraded and protected against daily attacks. We need toaccelerate and extend protection to all workers." He alsopointed out that "markets are more and more global while rightsare not equally global, leading to manifest tensions betweenworkers, countries and economic systems". .
