(AGI) Maranello, Feb. 19 - Ferrari presented its new Formula 1 car on Friday which it hopes can mount a serious challenge to Mercedes during the 2016 season. The SF16-H was the first car built under the leadership of team leader Maurizio Arrivabene and it was he who introduced the car, together with drivers Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen. "The car is beautiful," said Vettel. "I can't wait to get out on the track, I expect a great start." The new Ferrari will make its debut at upcoming tests in Barcelona. "It looks great, that's for sure," added Raikkonen. "We have waited a long time for this moment and we got there brilliantly. We will have a great season." "Its name is Ferrari and I think it goes beyond the simple concept of a racing car," Arrivabene commented. "Should it turn out to be a winning car, I think will immediately become a legend. This car is the result of the commitment of many people. We are now in Maranello but in a few hours, the car will head for Barcelona where we will see its true value. The president (of Ferrari) has given us all means necessary to ensure that with this car nothing was left to chance. You will see our drivers on track, but a lot of lesser known but equally important people have worked in various departments on the composite materials, in the wind tunnel, on the new mechanics, on designing the new engine and chassis. Their contribution and their passion make this car worthy to bear the name , Ferrari." The SF16-H features a new livery with more white, harking back to Ferrari F1 cars of the 1970s. It was redesigned in five main areas: the nose (higher for aerodynamic reasons), the front suspension, the radiator grilles, the power unit and the rear. The car created to challenge Mercedes in the race for the 2016 world title was presented by Simone Resta, Mattia Binotto and James Allison, who said they were proud of the work done at Maranello and that they were convinced it would do a really great job on the track. Development of the new Ferrari started about a year ago. Engine boss Mattia Binotto said that the power unit is the beating heart of the and compared to last year, much work was done on it. "We've sought to make it more compact to have a positive impact on aerodynamics and the car is now tighter and narrower compared to last year." For performance, the team improved combustion, the inlets, the hybrid system and the turbo. Thanks to innovative technical choices the improved power unit is a big step forward from the past. (AGI) .
