AGI) Cape Town, Oct 22 - The Italian Embassy in Pretoria hasset up a project to help disadvantaged students. "Bo'nna - dalmio punto di vista", organised by the embassy, the ItalianCultural Institute of Pretoria, Oxfam Italia, the UnitedNations and the town of Tswane and supported by the ItalianNational Olympic Committee, focuses on education andcreativity. Francesco Balletti, a member of the Italiandiplomatic mission, said the project would promote the ethicalvalues of friendly competitiveness in sport and life, to helpovercome prejudice and violence in Italy and South Africa. Thepilot project has introduced photography to 30 disadvantagedstudents at the elementary school of Rivoningo in Pretoria. Theaim is to stimulate them to describe their everyday lifethrough the eyes of others. Mr Balletti said: "We believe thatit is important for students, especially those living in lessadvantaged areas, to strengthen their sense of identity.Photography is a fantastic tool and it will help them toexpress themselves in different ways." The Open WindowInstitute set up a course fro them on the basics of using acamera and natural light. Two pictures taken by each studentwill be selected and published in a catalogue. They will beevaluated next month and the best divided into threecategories: "Who am I?", "My heritage" and "Succeeding insports". The winner will receive a camera. "But it is not amatter of just prizes. By promoting and encouraging competitonamong children we hope to inspire them to follow education toachieve their dreams," said Mr Balletti. (AGI). .
