(AGI) Rome, June 19 - The 21-year-old suspected of killing ninepeople at an African-American church in North Carolina couldface the death penalty after he confessed to the crime. DylannRoof was arrested in Thursday, a few hours after the killings, and said he wanted to unleash a "race war". He is now in jailin Charleston and has been charged with nine counts of murder. He told police he shot and killed three men and six women inthe Emanuel African Methodist Church. He claimed he had boughtthe Glock 45 used for the killings from a shop, althoughreports said it had been given to him by his father for hisbirthday. He was a staunch segregationist who planned everydetail of his crime over the last six months and hoped hisaction would provoke a race war, said his roommate, DaltonTyler. Dylann Roof had told him that he would do it and thencommit suicide. The Republican governor of South Carolina,Nikki Haley, called for the death penalty and requested thatthe man be tried in a South Carolina court and not a federalone. Michelle Obama, on a visit to Vicenza, said: "I hope thattragedies like these will one day come to an end. We have seentoo many tragedies like this ... there is somethingparticularly horrifying about something that happens [and is]so senseless in a house of worship." The case has sparkedfurther controversy over the easy access to arms in the U.S.,but a member of the board of the National Rifle Associationaccused the pastor who died, a South Carolina senator, ofhaving assisted the killer by not allowing congregants to beararms. A video shot on a smartphone shows the moments beforethe massacre at 9pm when all the congregants were sitting inthe church around a table to discuss the Bible. Everyone wasblack apart from Dylann Roof. In the video he is only seen fromat a distance and in profile. A few minutes later he shot andkilled those who had welcomed him to the prayer group.
