The attack againsta tourist resort in Sousse last June 26, which cost the livesof 38 people, following the attack at the Bardo Museum a fewmonths earlier, spurred Tunisian authorities to harshensecurity measures by passing provisions that many consider tobe a return to the regime of deposed President Ben Ali, withPresident Beji Caid Essebsi declaring a state of emergency.Regulated with a legislative decree from 1987, the state ofemergency was last called after the so-called "JasmineRevolution" that led to the downfall of the regime of Zine elAbidine Ben Ali, and remained in force from January 2011 toMarch 2014. In order to assure security, Tunisian MPsunanimously approved all the articles of the law on terrorismand money laundering with 174 votes in favour, none against and10 abstained. The law will enormously facilitate the work ofsecurity and army units, as well as the work of the judiciary, said Prime Minister Habib Essid, assuring his support to thenational parliament in combating terrorism. Religious leaders, however, raised objections to the article of the law forbiddingfundamentalist Islamic groups from pronouncing anathemasagainst Muslims. (AGI) . .
