(AGI) New York, Sept 30 - Pope Francis met the Kentucky clerkarrested for refusing to issue marriage licences to gaycouples. Kim Davis and her husband met the Pope privately for15 minutes at the Vatican Embassy in Washington during hisvisit to the U.S., according to a legal source. No advancenotice was given, for valid reasons, and especially so as notto interfere with the Pope's visit. The Pope was said to havethanked Ms Davis "for her courage" and told her to "staystrong". Ms Davis, a clerk from Rowan county, is a devoutApostolic Christian and had refused to issue marriage licencesto homosexual couples for several months, on the grounds thatmarriage can only take place between a man and a woman. Shebecame a theocon icon and was arrested in early September onthe orders of a federal judge. Ms Davis was released a few dayslater. (AGI). .
