Italian curates Pop Art exhibition in London

(AGI) London, Sept 16 - A Pop Art exhibition opens on Thursdayat the Tate Modern in London, to run until Jan. 24. An Italianresearcher brought together "The World Goes Pop", a collectionof 160 works, five of them from Italy, which will be one of themain autumn exhibitions in London. "The philosophy is torethink the idea of Pop Art. We all know Andy Warhol or RoyLichtenstein, but our aim is to make it clear that there areothers," co-curator of the exhibition, Flavia Frigeri,explained to AGI. The research went on for several years, inplaces like Brazil, Argentina and Slovakia, "all countrieswhere the movements were often absolutely independent of theAmerican ones," stressed Frigeri. As for the works ondisplay, ranging from 1964 to 1975, "there are no biginternational names, but for example from Italy we have threeworks by Mario Schifano and two by Sergio Lombardo, artiststhat everyone in Italy knows." Frigeri has worked recently withthe Italian Cultural Institute in London, now headed by thephotographer, editor and exhibition curator Marco Delogu, aSardinian living in Rome. Last Monday the Institute in BelgraveSquare held an evening devoted to Lombardo. "But I also have tosay thanks to the staff of the Italian embassy in the UK,"Frigeri stressed. From October the "If Arte Povera was Pop"film festival will be held at the Tate Modern, dedicated to theItalian experimental cinema of the sixties and seventies.Finally the artistic talent of authors and artists such asTonino De Bernardi, Carmelo Bene, Alberto Griffi, Ugo Nespolo,Mario Schifani and Pino Pascali will be on show on the bank ofthe Thames from Oct. 23 to 25.
