German Ex-Chancellor Kohl reacting well to double surgery

(AGI) Berlin, June 2 - Former German Chancellor Helmut Kohl is"doing well" after his second surgery and has been placed underintensive care, his office stated on Tuesday in response tomedia rumours on the 85-year-old leader's condition. Accordingto Der Spiegel, Kohl has been in intensive care at theHeidelberg university clinic for three weeks. Kohl's officesaid he underwent hip surgery in early May, from which he"recovered well", but that a second operation, the details ofwhich were not disclosed, then became necessary. Der Spiegelaffirmed it was a bowel operation and that the father ofGermany's reunification is now in "critical" condition. TheBunte magazine also reported that it was an intestineoperation, adding that Kohl has been in a wheelchair for sometime due to a stroke. Reports from Kohl's office, however, werefar less grave, stating that he will go on vacation once hecompletes his rehabilitation from the hip surgery. Kohl, wholed Germany from 1982 to 1998, also underwent a delicate heartoperation three years ago. Heidelberg is located nearLudwigshafen, where he currently resides. . .
