(AGI) Rome, June 15 - Fiat-Chrysler Automobiles (FCA) hasopened the gates of its facility in Melfi to 250 new employees.The first 140 began working on Monday, while the remaining 110will start next week, in accordance with the schedule agreedupon by FCA and local unions in Melfi last Tuesday. "The newworkforce adds more fuel to the engine of economic growth andwill bring direct and indirect benefits in Basilicata andbeyond," said the secretary general of the FIM CISL Basilicataunion, Gerardo Evangelista. "Hiring will also accelerate in thecompany's satellite activities, but targeted action must betaken towards the other factories in Basilicata as well. Theregion is currently running at two speeds, one side going fastand one side rapidly slowing down. The agreement at Melfi, dubbed"miraculous" by Italian unions, was a major topic at the recentfifth annual meeting of the world's metalworkers' unions inTurin, where delegations arrived from Argentina, Belgium,Canada, the Czech Republic, France, Germany, Poland, Spain,Switzerland, and the U.S. The FSA facility in Melfi hit a lowin 2013 and 2014, producing 115,000 and then 123,000 vehicles.FSA now estimates that it will hit 400,000 cars in 2015, ofwhich 310,000 are mini-SUVs (60 percent Jeep Renegade, 40percent 500X) and 90,000 are Fiat Puntos: levels that couldwarrant a gold medal in World Class Manufacturing (WCM).
