(AGI) Cairo, June 30 - Egypt's president, Abdel Fatah al-Sisi,promised tougher anti-terrorism laws during his speech at thefuneral of state prosecutor Hisham Barakat. Barakat was killedby a car bomb attack on his convoy on Monday. "The arm ofjustice is chained by the law. We're not going to wait forthis. We're going to amend the law to allow us to implementjustice as soon as possible," the former general said onTuesday. A 23-year-old militant from the Giza PopularResistance movement, allegedly responsible for theassassination, was also arrested on Tuesday evening. Barakatwas the highest-ranking Egyptian official to be killed interrorist attacks that have followed Mohammed Morsi's fall frompower in July of 2013. "Do courts in these circumstances work?Do these laws work? They work with normal people," a visiblyangry Sisi said. He pledged quicker executions for the hundredsof Islamist extremists who have postponed their death sentencethrough appeals. "If there is a death sentence, a deathsentence will be implemented," Sisi stated, chanting: "The law!The law!" Sisi was elected in June of 2014 with over 90 percentof the votes, vowing to reestablish security. His repressivemethods against dissent and terrorism have already led to over1,400 deaths, mainly militants from the outlawed MuslimBrotherhood. Thousands of dissidents, prevalently Islamists butalso some secularists, have been arrested, with hundredsreceiving the death penalty. The attack on Monday raised theterror alert in the country in view of the second anniversaryof Morsi's deposition. Egyptian forces in the southern Sinaiarea continue to be targeted, with an attack in Sheikh Zuwayedstriking a home and killing two children. The "al Moqawma alShabia" terror cell, believed to have ties with the MuslimBrotherhood and Hamas, claimed responsibility for the attack.The group's declaration comes after a video by theISIS-affiliated "State of Sinai", which shows the execution ofthree judges from the city of al Arish, in southern Sinai, onMay 16.
