Egypt court quashes Mubarak acquittal and orders retrial

(AGI) Cairo, June 4 - The Egyptian Court of Appeal has annulledthe acquittal of former President Hosni Mubarak and set hisretrial for Nov. 15. Mr Mubarak will face charges over thekilling of protesters during the revolution of January 2011, aswell as corruption and embezzlement of state funds. The courtupheld the appeal of the prosecutor and quashed all theacquittal verdicts of the Assize Court for the formerpresident, his sons Alaa and Gamal and his party colleagues. The others to stand trial besides the 87-year-old formerleader are fugitive businessman Hussein Salem, former InteriorMinister Habib el Adli and six of his assistants. The newtrials will open before the same Court of Appeal and theverdicts will be final, absolute and irrevocable, reportedEgyptian news agency MENA. Mr Mubarak, who led Egypt withan iron fist for three decades, has already spent three yearsin prison on other charges.
