(AGI) Paris, June 25 - French taxi drivers are stepping uptheir protests against ridesharing service UberPop. OnThursday, hundreds of taxi drivers went on strike to ask for aban on the application that connects customers and privatedrivers. According to police, nearly 2,800 drivers acrossFrance joined the protest and at least 30 roads were blocked,bringing chaos across the country. Access to the threeterminals of the main Paris airport Roissy-Charles de Gaullewas blocked, as well as to Orly. Traffic was halted at PorteMaillot, one of the main entry points to the capital, wheretaxi drivers attacked and set fire to two cars. Riot police andfirefighters intervened using water cannons, but the protestersresponded by throwing firecrackers and burned garbage cans.Access to the capital's two stations was blocked by a dozencars. Tensions also ran high in Lyon, Bordeaux, Toulouse, Lilleand Strasbourg. Tires were burned In Marseille and in Nice aMolotov cocktail was seized by police. The taxi drivers blockedthe train station in Bordeaux as well as the main access roadsand the Courthouse. The airport of Cannes was alsoinaccessible. The drivers are furious because the areafraid of losing their livelihood, now that UberPop allowsclients to pay lower prices than they would to traditional taxidrivers. UperPop was banned in France in January, but the lawis scarcely enforced and the service continues to operate.Interior Minister Bernard Cazeneuve has asked the prefect ofParis to issue an order prohibiting the use of the service andcalled for an end to all violence. The minister will meetrepresentatives of the union of taxi drivers at Matignon in thepresence of officials of the Economy and Transport ministries.. .
