(AGI) La Valletta, Sept 21 - Malta pays homage to DanteAlighieri on the 750th anniversary of his birth, with anexhibition of antique documents. Prestigious editions of theworks of the famous Italian poet will be on show from September25th to October 2nd at the National Library of La Valletta, inMalta. The Library has promoted this event together with theItalian Cultural Institute, sponsored by Malta's Ministry ofEducation and the Italian Embassy to Malta. Tullio De Mauro,distinguished linguist and expert on Dante, will cut theribbon.The Library is home to a large collection of booksincluding several editions of Dante's works, starting from a1502 publication of the Divine Comedy, produced in theprinter's office of the famous Venetian publisher Aldo Manuzio.This specimen is the centre-piece of the exhibition, alongsidea rare 1506 edition of the Divine Comedy printed by the Giuntifamily of Florence and two 16th-century editions of theConvivio. There are also some magnificent 19th-century editionsof the Divine Comedy, with golden finishing and engravings bythe French painter Gustave Dore. Some editions of Dante's worksin English and Maltese will also be on show. One section of thedisplay will be devoted to critical studies of Dante, publishedin the 19th and 20th centuries by Italian, French and Englishscholars, including a Dizionario Dantesco, published in Sienain 1855.. .
