(AGI) Milan, June 10 - A major retrospective exhibition of thework of Italian artist Alberto Burri (1915-1995) is to be heldat New York's Guggenheim Museum from Oct. 9 2015 to Jan. 62016. This will be the first such exhibition in the U.S. for 35years, as well as the most comprehensive. Entitled 'AlbertoBurri: The Trauma of Painting', the exhibition is being held tomark the centenary of Burri's birth, showcasing more than 100works, many of which have never been exhibited outside Italy. Apresentation of the event, which is being made possible byLavazza, was held in the Leonardo Room at Milan's PalazzoClerici on Wednesday afternoon. The exhibition shows the artistas a protagonist of the post-World War II artistic scene, drawing on literature on cultural exchanges between the U.S.and Europe during the 50s and 60s. Burri moved beyond thepainted surfaces and devices of American abstract impressionismand European informal art, using unconventional pigments, humble materials and prefabricated components. Marking thetransition between collage and assembly, Burri rarely resortedto painting or indeed the paintbrush, preferring stitching, combustion and laceration. He used patched remnants of tornjute bags, bumpy canvases and fused industrial plastic for hisworks, which often alluded to bodies, skins, membranes andwounds, expressed in a totally abstract vocabulary. The tactilequality of his work predated post-minimalism and the feministartistic movement of the 60s. (AGI). .
