Giuseppe Gaudino's new film draws from Freud and Fellini

(AGI) Venice, Sept 11 - Almost 20 years after GiuseppeGaudino's "Giro di lune tra terra e mare" ("Moon Spins BetweenLand and Sea"), he returned to the big screen with "Per amorvostro" ("For your love") on Friday in competition at theVenice Film Festival. This film explicitly draws from Freud andFellini. The Italian director recounts the feelings, nightmaresand dreams of Anna (Valeria Golino), a washed out woman onlykept alive by her love for her three children. Perhaps, howeverthe time has come to respond to a violent man (MassimilianoGallo) entangled with the underworld, and to redeem a life shewould like to live back in full colour. The film was shotalmost entirely in black and white. Gaudino takes us into thewoman's colourless world mixing personal drama, the urgent needto survive in a Naples ground down by organised crime,dreamlike visions and paintings in which Anna is represented as"ironically holy," the director explained. This mix of stylesis not used to tell a true story, but an "impalpable emotion,"said Gaudino. Anna is a woman who wipes herself out by givinglove. Memories are her only support. "I wanted to show thefeelings of a woman who lives in limbo like so many people ofdifferent backgrounds," the director continued. "We didn't usea hard and fast script to build the characters. We did severalreadings and tried to understand what lines should be said inNeapolitan dialect and how to use sign language (one of Anna'schildren is deaf-mute). A language that is not an end initself, but a way of saying that Anna understood others, buthad no words for herself," the director continued. The filmwould most likely not have been made if it were not for thehelp of many brave producers. "This operation has a miraculousaspect," Gaudino added. "I am enjoying my time in Venice," saidthe superb Valeria Golino. "We made this film against all odds.On our way we met almost only obstacles, from the smallest tothe largest. If it had not been for a small group of people wewould not be here," she concluded.. .
