(VELINO) Roma, 30 Mar - Uruguay has also celebrated the 60th anniversary of the Treaty of Rome. In the past few days, the Latin American country's foreign ministry has hosted historian and political expert Gerardo Caetano, president of the Uruguayan Association of Historians. The scholar gave a commemorative lecture on the "History and Origins of the European Union". The meeting began with an introduction by the head of the EU delegation in the country, Juan Fernandez Trigo, and the Italian Ambassador in Montevideo, Gianni Piccato. Many other diplomats accredited in the country were also present. Mr Caetano focused on the great impact the European model has had on ideas about regional integration in Latin America. He then highlighted the great benefits of the gradual integration process launched by the Treaties of Rome, which has led to the existing European Union.
