Rome - Eni started production at its Jangkrik natural gas development in the deep waters off the coast of Indonesia ahead of schedule. The Jangkrik project comprises the Jangkrik and Jangkrik Northeast gas fields in the Kutei Basin's Muara Bakau Block in the deepwater Makassar Strait.
The production from 10 deepwater subsea wells, connected to the Jangkrik floating production unit (FPU), became operational last March. It will gradually reach 13 million cubic feet of gas, which equates to 83,000 barrel of oil equivalent per day, Eni said in a release. After being processed onboard the FPU, gas will travel via a 79-km pipeline to the onshore receiving facility, both built by Eni. The gas will then reach the Bontang gas liquefaction plant via the East Kalimantan Transportation System.
The gas will supply both the Indonesian market and the export market, providing a substantial contribution to meeting Indonesia's energy needs and promoting its economic development. The early start of production, just three and a half years since the approval of the project, is further proof of Eni's ability to get exploration projects into production in a very short time. The Jangkrik start-up represents a record-setting achievement for the industry and a major step forward for Eni's activities in Indonesia. "We are proud of what we have achieved with the Jangkrik Development Project," said Eni CEO, Claudio Descalzi.
"The completion of the project and the start-up of production ahead of schedule further confirm Eni's strategy and global capabilities. It provides the opportunity for the Jangkrik FPU to become a hub for the development of our nearby gas discovery Merakes (Eni 85 percent, Pertamina 15 percent), which could start production within the next two years. We will consolidate our near field exploration strategy and operating model and also maximise the integrated development of our projects in Indonesia," concluded Mr De Scalzi. Eni is the operator of the Muara Bakau PSC with a 55 percent stake through its subsidiary Eni Muara Bakau BV. The other partners are Engie E&P, through its subsidiary GDF SUEZ Exploration Indonesia BV, with 33.334 percent, and PT. Saka Energi Muara Bakau, with 11.666 percent.
