(AGI) Milan, Oct 15 - With the signing of a "pact" for healthyfood and against waste by the mayors of more than 100 cities, the Mayor of Milan, Giuliano Pisapia, said "a dream is comingtrue" and expressed his satisfaction at having achieved thisfirst aim. However, as he explained during his speech at thesigning ceremony of the "Milan Urban Food Policy Pact'' onThursday, this is "not a point of arrival, but the beginning ofa new challenge." This pact will be presented on Friday Oct. 16to Secretary-General of the United Nations Ban Ki-moon. Theceremony at the Royal Palace included 84 mayors of thesignatory cities who "solemnly" undertook a pledge to implementpractical actions at the local level to help solve the problemsof the right to healthy food and water for all. "The agreementbetween mayors on food policies will be one of the mostimportant legacies of Expo," said Mayor Pisapia recalling thathunger and malnutrition are far from eradicated, and that thereare "1.3 billion tons of waste food every year. The mayors ofbig cities have decided to act, to move from words to deeds. Tosystematise policies on nutrition. Access to food is a commoncommitment," the mayor continued. He added that synergy betweencities is the right way to meet the challenge in order "tocreate a network of cities, with the exchange of best practicesand suggestions. I'm excited to sign this today with therepresentatives of more than 110 cities worldwide. We need tocontinue on the road that led us to achieve this. And we shouldconsider a fixed appointment, either every year, or every twoyears. It would be a tool to keep us competitive." . .
