Italian NGO award seeks to present new face of Africa

(AGI) Milan, June 26 - "Communicating Africa" is the sixthinternational award under the aegis of Harambee, a non-profitorganisation that since 2002 has carried out 57 projects in 18African countries, promoting initiatives in education anddevelopment in the Sub-Saharan region as well as communicationand awareness programmes in the rest of the world, in order todeepen knowledge of African culture. The award aims to presenta different image: an innovative Africa, without the prejudicesthat so often mark the approach to the "dark continent". The activities of Harambee, which in Swahili means "alltogether", include the "Communicating Africa" competition. AGIis the media partner in this - a strategic initiative for thepromotion of a "continent that is a treasure for everyone". Through the competition, Harambee aims to foster "the idea ofa continent that goes beyond the most popular stereotypes, of aland that is all the same and characterised by epidemics,conflicts and famine," said Rossella Miranda of the NGOHarambee Africa International. "We are trying to convey adifferent image, that of a vibrant continent, with a greatdesire to do things, rapidly growing and the theatre of endlessopportunities," Miranda continued, and stressed: "This is alsoa good way to cooperate and contribute to the human, economicand social development of Africa". In short, "CommunicatingAfrica aims to help provide a truer image of the continent,reflecting conflict but also highlighting the hopes, richnessand diversity of its peoples and cultures, thereby increasingour knowledge of a land of opportunity for everyone." Therehave been "impressive leaps forward in recent years", said thepromoters of the competition. In practical terms, the sixthedition is divided into two categories: reports anddocumentaries broadcast on TV or through web portals; and videoclips of students under 26 years old. The invitation toparticipate expires on July 30. The awards ceremony will takeplace in Rome in November, with 5000 euros going to the firstcategory and 1500 euros for video clips, entirely provided bythe sponsors. (AGI) . .
