Eni's Project diversifies economy, says Nigerian president

(AGI) Lagos, Oct 12 - Muhammadu Buhari, the president ofNigeria, Africa's major economic power and its most denselypopulated country, called on his fellow Nigerians to diversifythe local economy and develop agriculture, the country's mostpromising development tool. His words came from a video sent toan event organised by Italian energy giant Eni at the ExpoMilano 2015 on Monday, shown at Casa Corriere during theNAOC/Green River Project Farmers Day. Mr Buhari, who was swornin on May 29, said: "The diversification of our economy can nolonger be put off. Nigeria must therefore develop agricultureas the main pillar of its existence." Mr Buhari assuredNigerian farmers that his government intends to give themcontinuous support at all times. The Green River Project is amulti-year integrated project that was initiated in 1987 and isaimed at supporting agricultural development in the fourNigerian states in which the Nigerian Agip Oil Company (NAOC)operates: Imo, Delta, Rivers and Bayelsa. Since itsimplementation, the Green River Project has directly involvedover 35,000 farmers in 120 communities, directly and indirectlyaffecting more than half a million people. (AGI) . .
