(AGI) Vatican City, June 10 - "There is little time left toseek global answers. We will find adequate solutions only if weact together and in agreement. So there is a clear, definedethical action to be taken which can no longer be postponed."As the June 19 deadline approaches for Pope Francis to release'Laudato Si', his "green" encyclical letter, Eni's CEO ClaudioDescalzi reiterated the Pope's message to the Lima climateconference, as reported in the Osservatore Romano. Descalziwarned that a low carbon footprint is mandatory, admitting that"we are not succeeding." He explained that the European energymix for electricity, from 2010 to 2012, showed an 8 percentincrease in coal. At the same time, use of natural gas - whichreleases lower rates of carbon monoxide - has dropped by about25 percent. Eni's executive stressed the need both to respondto higher energy demand (37 percent higher than today by 2040)and to lower CO2 emissions (which must drop 40-70 percent by2050 and be at zero by 2100 to keep temperature rises below 2degrees). "Otherwise climate change will be irreversible. Tomeet these needs, we must find solutions that will not causeinequalities and will not jeopardise developing countries. Onlyby taking care of our garden can we preserve it and hand itover - possibly improved - to future generations." According toDescalzi, "energy companies are ready to comply and Eni, due toits history and corporate culture, is in the front line. Eversince its foundation by Enrico Mattei, the major Italian energycompany has always complied with ethical values, cared for manand his environment, and aimed at sustainable development. Fordecades thousands of people have embraced these core values toseek the best way of extracting natural resources, allowingsustainable growth along with the development of Italy and the80 countries we collaborate with, especially in Africa. Todaythis need has become even more urgent. We must think creativelyand find solutions to meet energy needs," Descalzi emphasised, adding that Eni will use its expertise to meet this majorchallenge of the millennium.. .
