(AGI) Milan, June 30 - Expo Commissioner General Bruno Pasquinoopened celebrations for the Democratic Republic of the Congo's(DRC) National Day on Tuesday, the 50th anniversary of thecountry's independence. "Africa is most widely representedcontinent at our universal exposition and is the mainprotagonist of the debate on nutrition and development,"Pasquino said. The Congolese delegation was led by theSecretary General of the DRC's Ministry of Commerce, Euge'nieSalembongo Basoyhe, who affirmed that the nation "holds 80million hectares of arable land, but only 10 percent of it isutilised today". "A rational use of these lands could provideCongolese citizens with complete food autonomy, but,paradoxically, we note that our population lives in anunacceptable condition of food insecurity," he stated. "TheDemocratic Republic of the Congo needs all minds and limbs toachieve its destiny. Investing in the Congo means investing inthe planet," he concluded. The DRC's space is located withinthe Expo's "Fruit and Legumes" Cluster. The concept of theClusters, Pasquino observed, "has allowed over 70 countries toparticipate in the Expo 2015 and discover similarities withintheir vastly different realities". Recalling the Congo'sselected theme for the Exposition, "Using Natural ResourcesBased on Their Potential", Pasquino noted that the DRC contains"the second-largest forest basin on the planet, which makes itone of the lungs of the Earth". The Congolese delegationvisited the Fruit and Legumes Cluster and then the PalazzoItalia, where it stopped for an official lunch. Throughout itsNational Day, the Congo offered visitors a vast program,culminating in a concert by Fally Ipupa, an icon ofcontemporary African music, to be held on the Bio-MediterraneanCluster's stage.
