(AGI) Rome, June 8 - The estimated number of migrants landingon Italian coasts since the beginning of this year isapproximately 54,000, estimated the UNHCR, the United NationsAgency for Refugees. In the month of June alone, to date,entries have reached 7,500 while they totaled 46,500 fromJanuary to May. Compared to 2014, the number of arrivals duringthe first five months of the year rose by 10-12 percent: thenumber of migrants who landed in Italy during the same periodwas 41,243. The estimated number of people who have died orhave gone missing in the Mediterranean since the start of theyear is 1,850, a figure almost six times higher than the 280estimate issued for January-May 2014. Statistics published bythe UNHCR website reveal that, from January to April 2015,5,390 people reached Italy from Eritrea, 3,720 from Somalia,2,790 from Nigeria, 2.090 from Syria and 2,100 from Gambia.Asylum seekers make up approximately 50 percent of the total.During the period from January to April 2015, 2,600 minors,1,700 of whom were unaccompanied, reached the Italian shores. .
