(AGI) Washington, Sept 18 - The U.S. is set to weaken the tradeembargo with Cuba and ease the movement of American travellersto the island, according to White House sources. The new rulesmay be announced on Friday, the day before the Pope's arrivalin Havana. The Vatican has played an important role in thishistoric turn of events, having appealed for the overturning ofthe embargo. The new rules would put an end to the economicblockade in force for more than half a century, leading to thenormalisation of relations between Washington and Havana,allowing American businesses to establish offices in Cuba andfacilitating imports of aeroplane, ship-building and softwarecomponents. Restrictions on private funding and rules regardingpeople authorised to travel to Cuba are expected to remain inplace for the time being. On Thursday, Jose Cabanas wasappointed the first Cuban ambassador to the U.S. in 54 years.Washington has yet to announce the name of the prospective U.S.ambassador to Cuba. (AGI).
