(AGI) Brazzaville, Sept 28 - More than 300,000 people havetaken to the streets of Brazzaville in protest against areferendum on constitutional reform. The protest was organisedby the leaders of the two main opposition parties, the CongoDemocracy Initiative and the Republic Front for the Respect ofthe Constitutional Order and Democratic Transition. Theprotestors carried placards saying "It's enough" and "32 yearsin power is too many", and Congo Republic President DenisSassou Nguesso has been described as "a danger to democracy".The opposition parities say the referendum is a "simplemanoeuvre by Nguesso to gain a third mandate, in violation ofthe current constitution, which provides for only twomandates". They are calling for "a democratic rotation with newpeople", and say that if the president "persists in organisingthis referendum, we will call everybody out onto the streets.The Congolese people are not happy, they have been sacrificedon the altar of egotism." They urged their supporters not totake part in the revision of electoral rolls. "We believe inrespect for the constitution, we want the people to havefreedom of choice over their president, so that Congo can havea president other than Nguesso, 32 years in power are toomany." they said. The protest was peaceful and the police didnot intervene. (AGI). .
