Sierra Leone doctor dies from Ebola in Nebraska hospital

(AGI) Washington, Nov 17 - Sierra Leonean doctor Martin Salia,who was hospitalised last Saturday in Omaha, Nebraska, has diedfrom the Ebola virus. His death was announced by the hospital,which emphasised that he had arrived in the U.S. in criticalcondition and with advanced stage symptoms. In the meantime,the European Commission has decided to allocate a further 29million euros to fight the virus's spread, in addition to thebillion euros that the European Union has invested since theepidemic began. The EU's Humanitarian Aid Commissioner,Christos Stylianides, who has returned to Brussels following amission in West Africa, said efforts must increase to "contain,control, treat and ultimately defeat this virus". The new fundswill finance sanitation missions on the field, facilitate theevacuation of contaminated medical personnel, and help nationsneighbouring Liberia, Sierra Leone, and Guinea to set up thenecessary measures to stem the epidemic. The EU is alsoinvolved in the search for a vaccine, and the Commission hasset 280 million euros aside for it. The results of the firstphase of experiments are expected in December. (AGI) . .
