(AGI) Washington, Mar 20 - A court in Ohio is to pay a57-year-old African American one million dollars incompensation for 39 years in jail for a murder he did notcommit. Ricky Jackson, released on Nov. 21, served thelongest-ever sentence by an innocent man. Testimony from a12-year-old boy, Eddie Vernon, pointed the finger at Jackson, who escaped the death penalty thanks to a legal error. He wassentenced, along with Wiley Bridgeman and his brother KwameAjamu, for the murder of Harold Franks in 1975. Vernon recantedmany years later and confessed that he had never been at thescene of the crime. There was nothing else to link Jackson, ateenager at the time, to the murder. Witnesses also said he hadbeen at school at the time of the crime. The Bridgeman brotherswere freed in 2002 and 2003. On learning from journalists ofthe compensation, Jackson said 'Wow, that's fantastic,man...This is going to mean so much". (AGI). .
