(AGI) Washington, Dec. 15 - A seminar on infectious diseases,with a focus on the Ebola emergency in West Africa, was held bythe Italian Embassy in Washington. The seminar, with AmbassadorClaudio Bisogniero, was organised with the New AmericaFoundation for researchers and scientific and medical workers.It was divided into three sections: the state of the crisis,looking at hemorrhagic fever and Chikungunya viral fever; newresearch frontiers and the theme "Public Health Preparedness"and the response of the international community. The seminarwas an opportunity to highlight Italy's contribution the Ebolaemergency thanks to the allocation of 7.7 million euros andscreening of more than 85,000 migrants in 10 months with theMare Nostrum sea rescue operation. Attention was also focusedon the microbiological laboratory of Milan's Sacco UniversityHospital and Rome's Spallanzani national infectious diseasehospital, one of the centres of excellence for prevention andtraining. Ample space was also dedicated to the Padoa-basedCUAMM, which explained the Doctors with Africa programme. Itpointed out the critical aspects of on-site crisis managementwhich need to be improved.
