(AGI) Baghdad, Sept 14 - Italy has offered to cooperate inprotecting Iraq's cultural heritage. It will help to usegeoreferencing techniques to build a database and analysearchaeological sites and monuments affected or threatened byISIS. The programme is based on collaboration between ItalianCultural Heritage and Tourism Ministry with UNESCO and is partof a project called "Technical assistance for therehabilitation and management for Iraqi Cultural Heritage". Ituses modern technology to use information from satellites totrace and prevent illegal trafficking of archaeological remainsby sharing the data with the anti-ISIS coalition. The firstarea mapped has been the district of Mosul and UNESCO has beengiven 300,000 euros to expand the area it can monitor. Theprogramme aims to monitor and assess archaeological sites, andpromote international awareness of the need to protect Iraq'scultural heritage.. .
