(AGI) Washington, Oct 2 - Worldwide child pornography andpaedophilia crimes are on the rise and Italy maintains itsfrontline role in international child protection initiatives,Justice Undersecretary Cosimo Maria Ferri said on Monday.Addressing delegates from 53 countries at the 2nd MinisterialConference of the Global Alliance against Child Sexual AbuseOnline in Washington, Ferri said that while paedophilia is anancient crime it has expanded and taken on new forms as aresult of globalisation and rapidly evolving informationnetworks. Online networks and social media have contributed tothe present-day transnational nature of crimes againstchildren, and cooperation between internet companies,governments and police needs strengthening, he said. As amember of the EU and as chair of the EU Council, Italy isactively involved in anti-paedophilia cooperation.Domestically, investigations into sex crimes against childrenleverage cooperation between Italy's postal police and an adhoc internet paedophilia task force. On the internationalfront, Italy recently played a key role in Operation"Inglorious": the Turin-based investigation pooled Eurojust,Interpol, FBI, Canadian and Australian resources, leading tothe arrest of more than 60 people in Europe and worldwide.(AGI) .
