(AGI) Rome, March 13 - There is an absolute need to intervenein Libya before Islamic State (IS) militias systematicallyconquer part of the country, said Italian Prime Minister MatteoRenzi in an interview broadcast by the Sky TG24 news. "Thereare different sensitivities at all levels in the internationalcommunity, within individual countries and in the institutionsof the United Nations, but there is no doubt that we need tofight terrorism with determination," said Renzi from theEconomic Forum in Egypt. "What has happened in recent weeksshows the threat is serious. Just think of how the Egyptianpeople have mourned the death of 21 Copts who were killed byterrorists in Libya. And there have been many other dramaticevents. There are always different views in diplomacy but Ithink I can say that there is broad agreement on the absolutenecessity of a meaningful and relevant intervention in Libya,which should start with diplomatic efforts in the UnitedNations." Italy has discussed the issue with Russia, France andGreat Britain, Renzi said, and declared that in the comingweeks he will hold talks on the subject with the United States- "a key player". The premier said he hoped to put Libya at thetop of the agenda. "The Mediterranean is not the periphery ofEurope, it is its heart. It is important that we work togetherwith all major countries of the area and Egypt is the mostimportant of all due to its number of inhabitants, its historyand the key role it could play in the peace and stabilisationprocess," Renzi explained on the sidelines of the forum inSharm el Sheikh. "This is our third meeting with (Egyptian)President al Sisi in six months. We work together. Our priorityis to fight terrorism and to keep Libya from becoming a furtherelement of concern". Renzi met with al Sisi after his addressat the summit's plenary session, and he two leaders held a longdiscussion on the Libyan crisis.. .
