(AGI) Rome, June 5 - A week after the visit of ItalianPresident Sergio Mattarella to London, which also commemoratedthe Italian dead in the First World War, the Italian CulturalInstitute in the British capital organised an evening on theconflict. "Italy's Great War: the experiences of soldiers onthe Italian front, 1915-1918" was an international conferenceheld on Thursday evening, dedicated in part to archivalmemories of the first major conflict of the 20th century. Usingsources from the National Diary Archive of Pieve Santo Stefanoand the Imperial War Museum in London, professor of Italianhistory Christopher Duggan, journalist Nicola Maranesi,lecturer Marco Mondini and the archivists and historians SimonRobbins and Mark Thompson reconstructed the events that saw thedeaths of over 600,000 Italian soldiers and many civilians, ina war that split the country politically and did not reallybring the hoped for unity. Italian Ambassador PasqualeTerracciano was also present at the event and initiated thediscussions. "The importance that Italy gives to thecommemoration of the Great War was emphasised last week whenPresident of the Republic, Sergio Mattarella, during hisofficial visit to London, recalled the fallen soldiers of theGreat War, both Italian and British, during a ceremony inWestminster Abbey," said Ambassador Terracciano.
