(AGI) Mexico City, Mar 10 - More than 180 university students, academics and diplomats gathered to hear Italy's ForeignMinister Paolo Gentilone deliver his Lectio Magistralis onforeign policy. This was his first mission to Latin America. His audience was attentive and curious, especially when MrGentilone mentioned the "cross-cutting and assymetricalthreats" from Islamic State (IS) "that require new responsesand a new order" in which Mexico also had a role to play.Conventional wars between countries were a thing of the past,he said. Italy's foreign policy had remained steady andconsistent since the end of World War II, and Italy had alwaysbeen in the forefront as a Europeanist country. Italian foreignpolicy was based on four pillars: Atlanticism, Europeanism, openness to trade exchanges and commitment to peacekeeping andhuman rights. These formed the compass of foreign policy, hesaid, despite the world having been plunged into a sea that hadbecome a stormy ocean. After the fall of the Berlin Wall, theillusion that there could be a super-power capable of governingall global procedures had been shattered. The United Nations(UN) played an important role, but neither should nor could"fill the open void left in the wake of geopoliticalbipolarism". A new order was needed, in which all countriesshould do their bit. There was no external body to whichsecurity policies could be delegated, like the U.S. Theinternational challenge called for cooperation among all theinterested parties and the role of the UN was increasinglyimportant.. .
