(AGI) Damascus, June 23 - Islamic State fighters have destroyedtwo ancient Muslim mausoleums in the historic Syrian city ofPalmyra, the country's antiquities director said on Tuesday.Palmyra recently fell under the control of the jihadists. Three days ago the fundamentalists blew up the mausoleum ofMohammed Ben Ali, a descendant of the family of the prophet'scousin Ali Ben Abi Taleb, said Syrian Director of Antiquities,Maamoun Abdulkarim. The mausoleum is in a mountainous area 4kilometres north of Palmyra and ISIS has published pictures ofarmed men next to a number of barrels, probably packed withexplosives, who were heading to the hill where the site islocated. According to Mr Abdulkarim, ISIS had previously blownup the 500 year-old mausoleum of Chkaf, known as Nizar AbouBahaeddine, a religious figure in Palmyra. The monument is inthe oasis city, 500 metres from a triumphal arch. In theregions under their control, says Abdulkarim, the extremistshave destroyed at least 50 mausoleums dating back 100 to 200years, as well as a number of tombs of people from Palmyra.
