(AGI) Rome, Oct 6 - The annual meeting of the NationalCommittee for Humanitarian Action against Anti-personnel Mines,a convention uniting important civil society organisations, metat Rome's Foreign Ministry on Monday. In addition toinstitutional representatives, the event was attended byassociations such as the Italian Anti-mine Campaign and theNational Association of Civilian War Victims, as well as by arepresentative of UNRWA, the United Nations Relief and WorksAgency, who presented a project for Palestinian refugees on theGaza Strip. The humanitarian mine clearance fund, managedby Italy's Development Cooperation Department, received 3.5million euros this year, over one million more than the averagein previous years. The humanitarian mine clearance projectsfinanced are in some of the areas most harshly affected by theplague of unexploded land mines, including Afghanistan, BosniaHerzegovina, Colombia, Somalia, the Gaza Strip and Sudan. Unexploded land mines continue to kill people years after theend of hostilities, as revealed during the recent ReviewConference of the Oslo Convention held in Dubrovnik, inCroatia, where cluster bombs continue to be found twenty yearsafter the end of the conflict in former Yugoslavia.
