Hackers shut down Islamic State Facebook replica

(AGI) Rome, March 9 - Hackers have shut down a replica ofFacebook apparently placed on line by the Islamic Statejihadist movement. The "5elafabook" ("The Caliphate Book")website, intended to recruit fighters, was opened lastWednesday but immediately shut down in a hacker attack. A noteposted on its webpage said: "The site is temporarily closed forsecurity reasons." The Egyptian newspaper Al-Ahram reported thewebsite was registered on March 3 with GoDaddy and its webmanager was Abu Musab, who claimed to be Egyptian but gave hisaddress as Mosul, a jihadist stronghold in Iraq. The sitedeveloper said the site was independent and not sponsored byIslamic State, but they did aspire to "rule the land of theCaliphate through the Quran" and claimed to be prepared formartyrdom to combat the "enemies of Allah". It functioned inthe same way as Facebook and Twitter, with status messages,user accounts and hashtags. There were strict rules to protectthe identity of users and ban the transfer of photos orpersonal information to other users. Although it wasshort-lived, the "Jihadists' Facebook" raised the curiosity ofTwitter users. Some asked for information about the website,others thanked Anonymous and other hackers for shutting itdown, and some joked about it. One wrote: "Do you give up soeasily? We would have expected a bit more courage from thedaring Islamic State." . .
