(AGI) Beijing, March 11 - The solar energy-powered plane, SolarImpulse 2, is heading for Beijing as it continues its journeyaround the world. The plane started took off from Abu Dhabi andlanded on Tuesday night in Ahmadabad, in India. On the sixthleg of its journey it is due to arrive at the southwesternmetropolis of Chongqing later this month. It will then make a1,190-kilometre journey to Nanjing in 20 hours. The project'swebsite said: "These major Chinese cities will enable BertrandPiccard and Andre Borschberg to establish contact with schoolsand universities to publicise the value of clean technologies."The Chinese leg of the journey was chosen because of thegeography and weather, reported the Chingqing Economic Times. However, the Chongqing airport authorities said: "We have beeninformed, but we have not yet been in contact. At the momentthe situation is unclear." After Chongqing and Nanjing, thezero-emission aircraft will leave for the longest leg of thejourney, flying across the Pacific Ocean to Hawaii, a journeyof 8,172 kilometres, which will take about 120 hours. Theorganisers explained that the flight across the Pacific Oceanis an endurance test for the pilot and the support team, constantly monitoring the route. China is following the journeyclosely because of the new options for using photovoltaicenergy. Lu Hejun, who runs Haenergy which works withphotovoltaic technology, announced in January his company wasplanning a solar energy-powered car. He made a presentationabout solar energy a few days ago at the People's PoliticalConsultative Conference, the consultative body of the People'sNational Assembly. . .
